Power Steering Gear-Legend 2 Of 2
This procedure covers the seal and bearing replacement for steering gears. The steering gear uses one double lip seal. Seal may be replaced without
removing the power steering gear.
Tools Required:
J6278 or equivalent Pitman Shaft Bearing Remover and Installer
J6219 or equivalent Pitman Shaft Oil Seal Installer
J4245 or equivalent Internal Snap Ring Pliers
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT

Pitman arm from steering gear.
CLEAN
-
Exposed end of pitman shaft (12) and housing (20).

Use a wire brush to clean pitman shaft splines.
DISASSEMBLE
1. Dust seal (64)
2. Retaining ring (35) using J 4245.
NOTICE: Use care not to score the housing bore when prying out seals and washers.
3. Backup washer (31), and double lip seal (63) using a screwdriver to pry them from the housing (20).
INSPECT

Housing (20) for burrs and remove if necessary.
4. Needle bearing (28).

Insert J 6278 or equivalent through the hole in the top of the housing (20) and drive out bearing (28).
ASSEMBLE
-
Coat double lip seal (63) and washer (31) with grease.
1. Needle bearing (28) to housing (20) using J 6278 or equivalent.
2. Double lip seal (63).
3. Backup washer (31).
4. retaining ring (35) using J4245.
5. Pitman shaft and side cover.
INSTALL OR CONNECT
-
Pitman arm to steering gear.
Check Valve Replacement
REMOVE OR DISCONNECT
-
Steering gear from vehicle.
