COLD WEATHER PREPARATION FOR DIESELS
MODELS AFFECTED
All Isuzu Diesels
SERVICE INFORMATION
Diesel engines are more sensitive to cold ambient temperatures than gasoline engines. Due to the higher compression ratio in a diesel, any decrease in the
ability of a diesel engine to turn over while starting in cold weather also decreases cold start performance. Diesel fuel waxing problems also affect cold
start and operation.
Several steps can be taken by owners of Isuzu diesels to insure top cold
weather performance:
1.
When sustained high speed operation is not anticipated, use a 5W-30 viscosity motor oil. Thinner viscosity oils make it easier for the engine
to turn while cranking. 5W-30 oils are not recommended for sustained high speed operation.
2.
Install an engine block heater. The following block heaters are available from the AIMI Parts Department:

3.
Always use either number 1 or "Winterized" number 2 diesel fuel when temperatures are expected to be below 20~F.
SPECIAL CAUTION
Adding up to 20% unleaded gasoline to unwinterized number 2 diesel fuel is allowed in emergency situations only. Gasoline/diesel fuel mixing
will adversely affect engine noise, fuel economy, durability, and warm engine starting. See Bulletin BI82-101 "Mixing Diesel Fuel and
Unleaded Gasoline" in the Miscellaneous Section of your Service Bulletin Binder for details.
Following these recommendations will insure problem free winter operation for your Isuzu diesel customers.
