1.

Remove the shift quadrant box from the transmission as outlined in the appropriate Workshop Manual.

2.

Remove the shift rod shaft from the shift quadrant box.

a.

If shaft surface has irregularities that would cause excessive bearing or seal wear, polish surface with 400-600 grit silicone carbide paper.

b.

If surface irregularities cannot be removed by polishing, replace with a new, improved shaft. Refer to the "Parts Information" section of this
Service Bulletin.

3.

Drill a 1/8 inch oil return hole into the shift quadrant box as follows:

a.

Remove and discard the oil seal from the rear of the shift quadrant box.

b.

Install the shift quadrant box into a bench vise or drill press vise.

IMPORTANT

Use only a 1/8 inch drill bit. Using a smaller bit will result in insufficient oil return; using a larger bit will crack the quadrant box.

c.

Drill a hole into the quadrant box, centered between the edge of the bushing and the bottom of the seal recess. See Figure 1 for hole location.
The hole must be drilled at a 25 degree angle, as shown in Figure 2. If the hole is not drilled correctly, oil will not return to the case.

4.

Remove the cap plug from the front of the shift quadrant box. Inspect the drain hole for restrictions. If necessary, remove any foreign material
restricting the drain hole.

5.

Inspect the shift quadrant front and rear shaft bushings for wear, Replace worn bushings as required. Be sure that the rear bushing is installed
flush with the inside of the housing (Figure 2) and does not block the oil return hole.

6.

If necessary, install a new cap plug in the front of the shift quadrant box.

7.

Install a new oil seal in the rear of the shift quadrant box.

8.

Reinstall the shift rod into the shift quadrant box.

9.

Reinstall the shift quadrant box onto the transmission as outlined in the appropriate Workshop Manual.
