Operation
This is a magnetic inductive pickup mounted in the dual cam angle sensor housing. It protrudes into the housing to within 0.020" of the
camshaft reluctor. The reluctor is a wheel with 14 slots machined into it, 12 of which are equally spaced. The 1 and 7 slot are spaced 10° from
one of the other slots and serve to generate a "sync pulse". As the reluctor rotates with the camshaft, the slots chang the magneyic field of the
inductive pickup sensor, creating an induced voltage pulse.
Based on these pulses, the DIS module sends RPM signals to the ECM. The ECM translates these signals to engine position and speed.
The DIS module will continue to send these rpm reference pulses to the ECM at a rate of one for each 180° of crankshaft rotation or 90° of
camshaft rotation.
By comparing the time between pulses, the DIS module can recognize the oulse representing the 1 and 8 (sync pulse) which starts the
calculation of ignition coil sequencing. The second "sync pulse" signals the the DIS module to fire the #2/3 coil and the fifth pulse signals the
module to fire the #1/4 coil.
