Starter Motor: Service and Repair

Except turbo charged w/manual transmission

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, then cover connector end with electrical tape.

2.

Disconnect wiring from solenoid.

3.

Remove starter motor retaining bolts and nuts, then the starter assembly.

4.

Reverse procedure to install.

Turbocharged w/manual transmission

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, then isolate cable end with electrical tape or equivalent.

2.

Remove alternator, refer to Starting and Charging/Charging System/Alternator/Service and Repair.

3.

Remove the upper starter motor retaining bolt, then the lower bolt.

4.

Remove the starter motor slightly from the transmission assembly with the wires connected.

5.

Disconnect wire from the ``30'' terminal (B-terminal) of the starter.

6.

Disconnect connector from the ``50'' terminal (C-terminal) of the starter.

7.

Pull out the engine harness from the wiring bracket of the starter motor, then remove starter motor from engine assembly.

8.

Reverse procedure to install. Torque starter motor retaining bolts to 35 ft. lbs.
