Drive Belt: Testing and Inspection

NOTE:  

-

When using a new belt, first adjust the deflection or tension to the values for the new belt, then readjust the deflection or tension to the values for
the used belt after engine for five minutes.

If there are cracks or any damage evident on the belt, replace it with a new one.

Follow the manufacturer's instructions for the tension gauge.

Measurement With Belt Tension Gauge 

1. Install the cable onto the gauge without the handle.
2. Route the cable down past the power steering pump and through the radiator opening in the front bulkhead. The cable will protrude from the front

grill.

3. Install the handle on the cable end.
4. Reset the gauge, then measure the belt tension. Tension:

-

Used Belt: 390 - 540 N (88 - 120 lbs) 

-

New Belt: 740 - 880 N (170 - 200 lbs) 

NOTE: 

-

Inspect the pump belt for cracks or any damage.

-

Replace the belt with a new one if necessary.

Measurement Without Belt Tension Gauge 

Apply a force of 98 N (22 lbs) and measure the deflection between the power steering pump and the crankshaft pulleys. Deflection:

Used Belt: 13.0 - 16.0 mm (0.51 - 0.63 inch)

-

New Belt: 11.0 - 12.5 mm (0.43 - 0.49 inch)
