Voltage Regulator: Testing and Inspection

    Test regulator when it is cold. Do not test immediately after driving.

Connect ammeter and voltmeter as shown in Fig. 11.

Start engine and run at 2500 RPM for several minutes, then ensure that ammeter reading is 5 amps or less. Ensure that battery is fully charged
or incorrect ammeter reading may result.

Lower engine speed to idle, then gradually increase speed to 2500 RPM and note voltmeter reading.

If voltmeter does not read 13.8-14.8 volts, adjust regulator as follows:

a. Disconnect electrical connectors at voltage regulator and remove regulator cover.

b. If voltage is too high, adjust regulator by bending core arm (D) Fig. 12. If voltage is too low, bend core arm up. If voltage cannot be

corrected by bending core arm, continue to step c.

c. Disconnect battery ground cable, then depress armature until moving point contacts (E) side point. Bend point arm (E) to obtain an armature

gap of .012 inch.

d. Release armature and adjust gap between (F) side point and moving point by bending point arm (F). Gap should be .012-.018 inch.
e. Adjust point gap by loosening 3 mm upper contact attaching screw, then moving upper contact up or down as required. Gap should be

.012-.016 inch.

f.

Readjust voltage with adjustment screw. When specified adjustment is obtained, secure adjusting screw by tightening locknut.

g. Install regulator cover and connect electrical connectors, then recheck voltage.
