Control Arm: Service and Repair
Lower Control Arm

Removal

1.

Raise vehicle and remove wheel.

2.

Remove tie rod end cotter key and castle nut. Using Tool J-21687-1, disconnect tie rod end from steering knuckle.

3.

Remove lower shock absorber bolt and push shock absorber upward.

4.

Remove stabilizer bar bolt and grommet assembly from lower control arm.

5.

Remove upper brake caliper bolt and slide hose retaining clip back approximately 1/4-1/2 inch.

6.

Place spring compressor over upper control arm and let hang.

7.

Raise lower control arm until level and place support under outer end of control arm.

8.

Loosen lower ball joint castle nut until top of nut is flush with the top of the ball joint. Using Tool J-26407-1, disconnect the lower ball joint from
the steering knuckle.

9.

Remove hub assembly and steering knuckle from lower ball joint and secure, with a wire or equivalent, to the side.

10.

Install spring compressor between first exposed coil of spring.

11.

Compress spring until spring clears lower spring seat.

12.

Remove support under lower control arm.

13.

Remove bolts connecting lower control arm to crossmember and the body.

14.

Remove lower control arm.

Installation

1.

Install ball joint in lower control arm.

2.

Install bolts connecting front of control arm to crossmember and rear of control arm to body. Do not fully tighten bolts.

3.

Raise lower control arm until level and place support under outer extreme of control arm.

4.

Remove spring compressor.

5.

Attach hub assembly and steering knuckle to lower ball joint. Torque castle nut to 72 ft. lbs.

6.

Attach upper ball joint to steering knuckle. Torque castle nut to 40 ft. lbs.

7.

Torque bolts connecting lower control arm to crossmember and body to 43 ft. lbs.

8.

Install stabilizer bar bolt and grommet assembly to lower control arm. Tighten the nut to the end of the threads on the bolt.

9.

Install lower shock absorber bolt. Torque bolt to 29 ft. lbs.

10.

Slide hose retaining clip in place and install upper brake caliper bolt. Torque bolt to 36 ft. lbs.

11.

Attach tie rod end to steering knuckle. Torque castle nut to 29 ft. lbs. Install new cotter key.

12.

Install wheel and torque nuts to 50 ft. lbs.
