ABS Light: Description and Operation
4 Wheel Antilock Brake System Only

INDICATORS

The antilock brake system uses two lights, the amber "ABS" warning light and a blue "ABS ACTIVE" indicator light.

Indicator

Purpose
The Electronic Brake Control Module (EBCM) continuously monitors itself and the other ABS components. If the EBCM detects a problem with
the system, the amber "ABS" warning light will light continuously to alert the driver of the problem.

The "ABS" Warning Light - indicates that a problem has been detected that affects the operation of ABS. No antilock braking will be
available. Normal, non-antilock brake performance will remain. In order to regain ABS braking ability, the ABS must be serviced.

The Blue "ABS ACTIVE" - will illuminate during an ABS stop and during system initialization. Since the brake pedal feedback (or
pulsation) normally associated with other ABS systems during operation does not occur with this ABS system, this additional indicator in the
instrument cluster informs the driver of ABS operation. 

NORMAL INDICATOR OPERATION

1. When the ignition switch is turned to the "ON" position, prior to starting the engine, the amber "ABS" warning light and blue "ABS ACTIVE"

indicator light should illuminate for approximately three seconds.

2. As the engine is cranked, the amber "ABS" warning light should illuminate steady.

3. Three to four seconds after the engine is started, both indicators should be off.

4. Whenever the vehicle is involved in an ABS stop, the "ABS ACTIVE" indicator light will illuminate, notifying the driver that ABS is in operation.
