7. Outer pinion bearing (35). Use J-39602, remove the outer bearing.
8. Collapsible spacer.

INSPECTION 

1. Seal surface of the pinion flange for tool marks, nicks, or damage such as a groove worn by the seal. Replace the flange if necessary.
2. Carrier bore for burrs that might cause leaks around the outside of the seal.

INSTALLATION  

1. Collapsible spacer (30) onto the pinion.

NOTE:  Discard the used collapsible spacer and install a new one.

2. Outer bearing (35). Driving the outer bearing onto the pinion.
3. Oil seal slinger (32).

4. New pinion oil seal using J-39829.
5. Seal lubricant to the outside of the pinion flange (5) and the sealing lip of the new pinion oil seal.
6. The pinion flange (40) to the pinion by tapping it with a rawhide hammer until a few threads show through the pinion flange.
7. The pinion washer (29) and a new nut (28) while holding the pinion flange with J-8614-01:

a. Tighten the nut until the pinion end play is just taken up. Rotate the pinion while tightening the nut to seat the bearings. Once there is not end

play in the pinion, the preload torque should be checked.

b. Remove J-8614-01. Using an inch-pound torque wrench, check to make sure the pinion preload is equal to or slightly over the reading

recorded during removal.

8. Propeller shaft (13) to the pinion flange (5).
9. Bolts (3) to pinion flange (5).

Torque 63 Nm (46 ft. lbs.).
