Evaporator Core: Service and Repair

 EVAPORATOR CORE AND / OR EXPANSION VALVE

1.

Disconnect battery ground cable, then cover connector end with electrical tape.

2.

Discharge A/C system, then remove rubber drain hose from evaporator core.

3.

Remove glove compartment, then disconnect A/C controller electrical connector.

4.

Remove glove compartment lower reinforcement brace from dash panel.

5.

Disconnect electrical connectors from evaporator case.

6.

Working from inside engine compartment, remove upper A/C line retaining clamp.

7.

Remove refrigerant line retaining nuts at expansion valve.

8.

Remove evaporator case retaining nuts: one on engine compartment side, two on blower assembly and on heater unit.

9.

Remove four evaporator case retaining clips from case, then the four retaining screws.

10.

Slit lower case with knife to remove upper case half from lower case.

11.

Remove expansion valve from case, then the evaporator core from case.

12.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Apply adhesive to the parting face of lining when assembling the evaporator case.
b. When installing a new core, add 1.7 ounces of new compressor oil.
c. Use new O-rings, lightly lubricated with refrigeration oil, when installing expansion valve and connecting lines.
d. Torque refrigerant line retaining nuts to 53 inch lbs.
