7. Rotate pinion gear until cutaway portion of serrations in shaft is parallel or aligned to the rack, then carefully measure and record dimension A

shown in Fig. 5. This measurement must be used for reassembly.

8. Remove valve plug, then pinion retaining nut.
9. Remove pinion retaining ring, then valve/pinion assembly.

10. Remove retaining ring, then rack assembly and seal holder together. Carefully remove rack from housing to avoid damage to inner housing

face.

11. Using oil seal removal tool No. J-38304-5, or equivalent, remove inner rack seal and shock damper.
12. Remove piston ring and O-ring.
13. Remove drive bearing and seal, then drive seal ring.
14. Remove drive seal, then valve seal assembly.
15. Remove retaining ring, then valve assembly.
16. Remove pinion shaft.

INSPECTION

Always use lint free rags. Never use a wire brush. When necessary, mineral spirits can be used to clean parts. Carefully inspect mating surfaces,
seals and bearings. Inspect gear housing. Replace if inner piston cylinder walls are scuffed, damaged or if housing is found to be cracked or
porous. Replace housing if lower pinion bearing is defective.

ASSEMBLY

1. Using pinion seal installer tool No. J-38304-9, or equivalent, install oil seal onto pinion shaft.
2. Fit the valve assembly seal ring into the seal groove.
3. Install valve assembly to pinion shaft. If valve assembly will not slide onto pinion shaft, do not force it.
4. Install valve assembly.
5. Install retaining ring, then valve seal assembly.
6. Install drive seal, drive seal ring and drive bearing.
7. Using bearing and oil seal installer tool No. J-38304-7, or equivalent, install upper bearing and seal.
8. Using piston seal compressor tool No. J-38304-7, or equivalent, install piston ring.
9. Apply multi purpose grease to rack gear surface.

10. Install rack seal into seal ring installer tool Nos. J-33997-2 and J-33997-3, or equivalents, then install seal to rack.
11. Install inner rack seal and shock damper on rack assembly and seal holder tool No. J-38304-7, or equivalent,
12. Install rack assembly with inner rack seal and shock damper.
