13. After installing the rack shaft assembly and the holder assembly, push the rack shaft in as far as possible. Measure the distance between the end of

holder and the tip of the rack shaft. The oil seal is positioned correctly when the measured distance is greater than L = 0.39 inch (10 mm) shown in
Fig. 6.

14. Using seal ring installer tool No. J-38304-8, or equivalent, compress seal rings onto the valve housing.
15. Install valve/pinion assembly into valve housing.
16. Install pinion retaining ring, then pinion retaining nut.
17. Install valve plug, plunger spring and adjusting plug.
18. Install adjusting plug locknut.
19. Using adjusting plug locknut wrench tool No. J-35309, or equivalent, torque adjusting plug to 43 inch lbs.
20. Loosen the plug and once again torque plug. Back off plug 26°, then torque locknut to 49 ft. lbs.
21. Check pinion shaft rotational torque. Rotational  torque should be between 5.3-14.1 inch lbs. If rotation torque is not within specification, loosen

locknut and readjust plug.

22. Install inner tie rod end and new locking washer to rack end.
23. Stake the new locking washer to rack end.
24. Apply silicon grease to the inner surface of small opening of boot.

25. Adjust the tie rod length to 8.507 inches as shown in Fig. 7.
26. Arm air bag system.
