Transmission Mode Switch: Description and Operation
PURPOSE
When switched ON by the driver, this switch tells the TCM to operate the transmission in winter mode. This mode causes the vehicle to move
from a stop in third gear to lessen the probability of wheel spin and loss of traction on slick roads.
OPERATION
Winter mode will operate when switched ON after all of the following conditions are present.
a) The gear select position 15 "D" range only
b) Vehicle speed is 6 mph (10km/h) or less
c) Transmission oil temperature is 266°F (130°C) or less for 2.8L and 3.1L engine, 284°F (140°C) or less for 3.2L engine.
d) Kick-down switch is off
e) Accelerator opening is at 7% or less
CANCEL RELEASE
Cancellation by driver
a) Turning off the winter drive mode switch
b) Shifting select position to "P", "3", "2", or "L" (Winter drive mode is not canceled by selecting "D", "N", or "R")
c) Ignition key is turned off
Automatic cancellation
a) When vehicle runs at 19 mph (30 km/h) or more for 1 second or more
b) When transmission oil temperature reaches 284°F (140°C) or above
NOTE: The mode returns to normal drive mode automatically after the winter drive mode is canceled.
