Brake Caliper: Service and Repair

Removal

1. Perform steps 1, 2 and 3 outlined under ``Brake Shoe & Lining, Replace'' removal procedure. However, disconnect brake hose from caliper and

cap openings in hose and caliper.

2. Remove caliper from vehicle.

Overhaul

1. Remove dust seal from caliper with a suitable tool.
2. Place a block of wood into caliper and force piston from caliper with compressed air applied to the fluid port.  Do not place fingers in front of

piston when using compressed air.

3. Remove piston square sealing ring.
4. Inspect cylinder bore and piston for wear, scuffing or corrosion. Stains and minor corrosion in the cylinder bore may be removed with crocus

cloth. Thoroughly clean caliper after using crocus cloth.

5. Lubricate cylinder bore and piston square seal, then install piston seal into bore.
6. Install piston into caliper.
7. Lubricate piston and install dust seal onto piston and install dust seal onto piston and caliper.

Installation

1. Perform steps 1 and 3 outlined under ``Brake Shoe & Lining, Replace'' installation procedure.
2. Connect brake hose to caliper, then bleed brake system.
3. Install wheel assembly and lower vehicle.
