Idle Speed Control Valve: Description and Operation
Idle Air Components
PURPOSE
The valve permits measured quantities of intake air to bypass the throttle valve. Bypass air volume is ECU regulated to maintain correct idle speeds
across the range of engine operating conditions.
OPERATION
The valve is a stepper motor device. Primary inputs factored into ECU idle speed control are coolant temperature, throttle position and engine speed.
Additional compensation is provided for fluctuating engine load by monitoring A/C clutch and gearbox sensor (auto. trans. only) inputs.
To achieve quicker valve response for engine starting, the ECU "parks" the valve at its mid-travel position each time the ignition is switched "OFF."
LOCATION
On intake manifold, left side of engine.
