Throttle Butterfly Valve: Testing and Inspection
1.
Remove the air intake elbow/hose assembly from the engine.
2.
Loosen the nut securing the throttle cable to the manifold bracket.
3.
Loosen the kickdown cable to manifold bracket lock nut.
4.
Ensure both the throttle and the kick down cables do not restrict the linkage adjustment.
5.
Loosen the throttle stop nut.
6.
Using a suitable feeler gauge adjust the throttle stop screw to obtain an air gap of 0.05 mm (0.002 in.) between the butterfly valve and the side of
the housing.
7.
Tighten the throttle stop lock nut.
8.
Recheck the throttle butterfly valve setting.
9.
Fit and align the full throttle setting adjustment tool to the stop plate.
10.
Ensure the pointer aligns with the idle mark "I" on the throttle linkage.
11.
Loosen the full throttle stop lock nut.
12.
Fully open the throttle and adjust the full throttle adjusting screw to align the pointer on the special tool to mark "A" for automatic transmission
equipped vehicles, or "M" for manual transmission equipped vehicles.
13.
Release the throttle linkage and tighten the full throttle stop lock nut.
14.
Remove the full throttle setting tool.
15.
Using a suitable feeler gauge adjust the kickdown cable adjusting nut to obtain a gap of 0.76 mm (0.03 in.) between the outer cable and the inner
cable crimp clip.
16.
Tighten the lock nut.
17.
Reposition the throttle cable dust cover over the adjuster.
18.
Check and adjust the throttle potentiometer.
19.
Fit and align the elbow/hose assembly to the throttle housing.
20.
Position and tighten the elbow to throttle housing hose clip.
21.
Connect the elbow to the air flow meter.
22.
Tighten the clip securing the elbow to the air flow meter.
23.
Position and tighten the hose clips.
24.
Run the engine until normal operating temperature is reached, then switch the engine off.
25.
Disconnect the coolant thermistor multi-plug connector at the thermostat housing.
26.
Connect a 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistor across the multi-plug connections.
27.
Ensure the leads of the resistor do not touch any metal parts of the vehicle.
28.
Switch the ignition on and wait 10 seconds.
29.
The idle speed stepper motor should now be fully wound in, verify by holding the motor and feeling for vibration.
30.
With the ignition still on, disconnect the idle speed stepper motor multi-plug cable harness connector.
31.
Remove the resistor from the thermistor cable harness connector and reconnect the connector to the thermistor.
32.
Start the engine and if necessary adjust the idle speed actuator air bypass screw with a 7/32 allen wrench to 550 - 600 RPM.
