Notes - Brake Bleeding

WARNING: The anti-lock braking system operates under high hydraulic pressure, and great care must be exercised when servicing or repairing the

system.

Avoid skin/eye contact or ingestion of brake fluid. if skin or eyes are accidentally splashed with brake fluid, rinse the affected area
immediately with plenty of water and seek medical attention.

IF BRAKE FLUID IS INGESTED, SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION IMMEDIATELY.

CAUTION: Fluid must not be allowed to contact the vehicle paintwork.  Remove any spilt fluid from the paintwork by rinsing away with running

water.  Methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) must not be used to clean the contaminated area.

Never use methylated spirit (denatured alcohol) for cleaning brake system components.  Use only CASTROL/GIRLING BRAKE
CLEANING FLUID.

Throughout the following maintenance/service operations, absolute cleanliness must be observed to prevent grit or other foreign matter
contaminating the brake system.

CAUTION: The following notes must be read before commencing bleed procedure.

- Bleeding the ABS system is not a routine maintenance operation and should only be necessary when part of the system has been disconnected or the

fluid is contaminated.

- During the bleeding procedure, it is important that the level of fluid in the reservoir is maintained at approximately 2mm below the bottom of the filler

neck. 

- If motor/pump unit, fluid intake hose, or hydraulic unit of ABS system has been removed or disconnected, bleed as described under FLUID INTAKE

HOSE.

NOTE: Motor/pump unit cannot charge accumulator if air, and not fluid, is standing on low pressure side of pump.

- For all other procedures, bleed as described under FRONT BRAKES or REAR BRAKES. 

CAUTION: Do not allow pump motor to run continuously for more than two minutes.  If for any reason the motor does overrun two minutes, switch 

OFF ignition immediately and allow motor to cool for at least ten minutes.

ON COMPLETION OF THE BLEED PROCESS

1. Switch on the ignition.
2. Wait until the accumulator is charged to the upper cut-out point and top up the reservoir to the maximum level.  If the fluid level is too high, any

excess fluid must be drawn off.  This can be done by using the procedure for bleeding the rear brakes.
