Superheat Switch: Testing and Inspection

TESTING

1. If the refrigerant level is satisfactory and there is not a blockage in the air conditioning system, but the thermal fuse persists in melting carry out the

following tests.

Test procedure A--For use with a cold engine and at ambient temperatures below 30°C.

1. Connect a test lamp in series with the superheat switch.

NOTE: With the test lamp connected in the circuit it will prevent the thermal fuse from operating as a safety device therefore great care must be
taken when carrying out the test.

2. Connect a manifold gauge set to the air conditioning system.

NOTE:  Ensure a serviceable thermal fuse is fitted.

3. With the ignition and the air conditioning switched on.
4. Depressurize and evacuate the air conditioning system, then close the manifold hand valves.
5. The test lamp SHOULD NOT LIGHT during this operation.

NOTE:  If the test lamp does light then follow test procedure (B).

Test procedure B

1. With test lamp not illuminated, connect the center hose of the manifold gauge set to a refrigerant supply container.
2. Start and run the engine at about 2000 rev/min.
3. After a few minutes the lamp should light. As soon as the test lamp lights, carefully operate the low pressure hand valve to allow refrigerant to

charge the system. As soon as the air conditioning system becomes charged the lamp should go out.

4. If the above lamp functions do not occur, renew the superheat switch.
5. After checking remove the test lamp from the circuit and reconnect the switch lead onto the terminal.
6. Operate and check the air conditioning system.
