Engine Stalling - Transmission Fluid Level Low - Checking Procedure

ISSUE:
Engine stalls at idle with the transmission in gear or when slowing to a stop can be caused by low transmission fluid level.
Low fluid level causes the torque converter clutch to lock up momentarily and stall the engine.
ACTION:
Check the transmission fluid level using the following procedure:

Drive the vehicle using manual third gear until normal operating temperature is reached. (This can require up to a 15 mile run from cold).

Park the vehicle on a level surface. Select PARK, apply the hand brake, and allow the engine to idle for one minute.

Apply the brake pedal and shift the gear selector lever through each gear, pausing in each gear position.
^
Return the selector lever to PARK and allow the engine to idle.

Withdraw the transmission dipstick and wipe it with a clean shop rag. Immediately check the fluid level by replacing the dipstick and withdrawing it.
The fluid level must be between the minimum and maximum HOT marks on the dipstick as indicated.
If the level is low, add DEXRON II E fluid and recheck.
NOTE:
Do not use the COLD reference mark on the transmission dipstick to check the fluid level.
