Throttle Valve Clearance (Throttle Butterfly Gap) - Adjustment Guidelines

MODEL:
All

DATE:
8/93

ISSUE:

Throttle valve clearance is factory set for minimum air flow without sticking closed.

The setting has no effect on idle quality or vehicle performance unless an adjustment error is present.

ACTION:

Do not adjust throttle valve clearance for a rough idle condition.

Clean the throttle valve(s) and check the adjustment only when one of the following conditions exists:

^

Throttle sticks closed (clearance too small) - evidenced by high initial pedal pressure required to apply the throttle.

^

Base idle too high and cannot be reset (clearance too large) - the idle bypass screw is completely closed and the base idle setting is still too high.

If the gap between the throttle butterfly and housing is outside the range of .001" - .004", use a .00211 feeler gauge to reset the clearance.

Refer to Service Manual Section 19.20.04 (3.6L/4.OL engines) or Section 19.20.11 (V12 engines).
