Vanden Plas L6-4.0L (1990)
1.
Remove vent cover(s). Equally fill all battery cells to a level of 4-6 mm above the separators, (Fig. 5).
2.
Test the electrolyte with a hydrometer (Fig. 6). It must have a specific gravity of 1.270 at 78~F (25~C). Refer to Fig. 7 for temperature correction.
3.
Wait fifteen minutes after the initial refill. Add electrolyte to bring the level in each cell back to 4-6 mm above the separators, (Fig. 5).
4.
Immediately after refilling the cells, charge battery at a slow rate according to the equipment manufacturer's recommended time and procedure.
CAUTION:
Do not use a fast charger to charge battery.
5.
After charging, adjust the electrolyte level to 6 mm above the separators (Fig. 2) and install vent cover(s). Allow battery to stand for four hours.
CAUTION:
Ensure battery has stood for four hours before checking open circuit voltage.
6.
Measure open circuit voltage of the battery.
Open Circuit Voltage
Action
12.70 V or more
O.K. for service
12.69 V or less

7.
If necessary, recharge the battery and adjust the electrolyte level to 6 mm above the separators. Install vent cover(s) and allow the battery to stand
for four hours.
8.
Measure battery open circuit voltage.
