Axle Shaft Assembly: Service and Repair

Fig. 4  Hub Removal

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle. Remove rear wheel.

2.

Remove rear caliper lower securing bolt. Pivot caliper upwards.

3.

Remove outer pad. Carefully disconnect lockwire securing pad carrier bolt.

4.

Remove upper caliper securing bolt and secure caliper to bump stop rubber.

5.

Remove clevis pin securing parking brake expander to parking brake cable.

6.

Remove driveaxle nut.

7.

Install thread protector tool No. JD-1D-7 or equivalent, to driveaxle thread.

8.

Install hub removal tool No. JD-1D or equivalent, to hub. Tighten center bolt and remove hub. Fig. 4.

9.

Pull parking brake cable from hub and lower hub from driveaxle.

10.

Remove nuts/bolts securing shaft to differential and remove driveaxle assembly.

11.

Reverse procedure to install, noting the following:
a. Torque caliper to carrier to 23-30 ft. lbs.
b. Torque driveaxle to differential 57-70 ft. lbs.
c. Torque driveaxle hub nut to 210-230 ft. lbs.
