KEYPOINTS: "SHORT-CUT" REPLACEMENT METHODS
ISSUE:
Incorrect "short-cut" methods of gear main rope seal replacement on XJ6 Series III and XJ-S vehicles (up to VIN 160010).
ACTION:
Rear main rope seal replacement procedures which do not include removing the crankshaft and sizing the seal with Service Tool JD 17B will result in the
following:

Incorrect size and shape of the rear main seal.
^
Misalignment of the rear seal with the crankshaft main bearing seal.
^
Overheating of the rear seal surface and melting of the main bearing insert overlay material.
^
Failure of the rear main bearing and/or seal.
^
Engine block distortion.
NOTE:
Warranty claims for short-cut rear main seal replacement will not be accepted.
