Wheel Bearing

Front

  Wheel bearings are adjusted by tightening the adjusting nut to eliminate all play and then backing the nut off slightly to provide play of 0.002 - 0.005
inch (0.05 - 0.15 mm).

Rear

CHECKING

  The hub bearing end float is controlled by a spacer located next to the universal joint on the halfshaft. Spacers are available in thickness from
0.109-0.151 inch (0.003 inch increments).
  End float tolerance is .001-.003 inch. Correction must be made if more than .0004 inch beyond specification.

1.

Raise and support rear of vehicle.

2.

Remove wheel and gently tap hub.

3.

Clamp backlash gauge tool No. JD-13A or equivalent, to hub carrier as shown (1) in Fig. 4, so stylus of dial gauge (2) contacts hub flange.

4.

Note reading of gauge. Using two levers (3), move hub to fullest extent and note reading of gauge.

5.

If difference of readings exceeds .004 inch, proceed with following adjustment procedure.

ADJUSTING

  The hub bearing end float is controlled by a spacer located next to the universal joint on the halfshaft. Spacers are available in thickness from

  End float tolerance is .001-.003 inch. Correction must be made if more than .0004 inch beyond specification.

1.

Remove hub and carrier assembly from vehicle.

2.

Remove spacer from halfshaft and measure thickness.

3.

Determine thickness of spacer necessary to obtain correct end float and install onto halfshaft.

4.

Reverse removal procedure and recheck end float.

Service and Repair

1.

Remove rear hub assembly from vehicle as described under HUB CARRIER ASSEMBLY.

2.

Separate hub from carrier using a press.

3.

Place hub carrier in a soft jawed vice. Using a punch, remove bearing tracks out of fulcrum shaft housing.

4.

Drive out hub inner bearing track, seal and bearing from hub carrier.

5.

Drive out hub outer bearing track from hub carrier.

6.

Connect press adapter tool No. JD16C-1 or equivalent, to hub outer bearing. Position assembly in hand press tool No. MS47 or hydraulic press
adapter tool No. MS370 or equivalents, and remove bearing.

7.

Reverse procedure to install. Tighten to specifications and check hub bearing end float.
