Final Drive - Pinion Oil Seal

Raise the vehicle on ramp.

Undo and remove the propshaft to the final drive flange securing nuts/bolts (Fig 1).

Reposition the propshaft from the final drive flange.

Using a suitable torque wrench measure the torque required to turn the pinion through the back lash.

Ensure that the pinion is reset before each measurement.
-
Mark pinion flange securing nut to pinion shaft.
-
Undo and remove the pinion flange securing nut using Service tool 18G 1205 to secure the flange.

Place a two leg puller 18G 2 to the front.
-
Undo the tool centre bolt and fit and align the puller to the pinion flange.
-
Tighten the tool centre bolt to the extract flange.
-
Place the puller aside and using suitable seal remover tool, displace and remove the pinion seal.

Clean flange and casing seal faces.
Place the pinion seal replacing tool (18G 1428A) to the front (Fig 1).

Fit and align the new seal to the tool.
-
Fit and fully seat the seal to the casing and place tool aside.

Lubricate the pinion seal and fit and fully seat the drive flange to the pinion/seal.

Fit and tighten the drive flange securing nut to mark.

Using a suitable torque wrench set pinion back lash and the "pre load" to (35-55 lbs inch).

Reposition the propshaft to the drive flange.
