Steering Gear: Adjustments

  Maximum clearance between gear rack and pinion should not exceed .010 inch. Measure clearance from below vehicle.

1.

Detach outer ball joint on tie rod nearest to pinion, from steering arm.

2.

Remove grease nipple from rack damper threaded plug. Insert stem of dial indicator through grease nipple hole to contact back of rack shaft.

3.

Secure gauge to rack and zero gauge.

4.

Firmly grip tie rod inner ball joint assembly, nearest pinion. Move it away from pinion, towards rack damper assembly.

Note reading on gauge.

If clearance is excessive and adjustment is required, release locknut (2), screw in plug (3) until firm pressure resistance is felt. Fig. 4.

7.

Back off plug 1/6 turn and tighten locknut.

8.

Re-check pinion to rack clearance.

9.

Move gear through its full travel. If binding occurs at any point, slightly increase clearance and re-check.

10.

When correct clearance is achieved, tighten locknut to specifications and install grease nipple.

11.

Connect tie rod outer ball joint to steering arm. Check front wheel alignment and adjust as necessary.
