POWER STEERING RACK - RENEW

^

Centralize the steering wheel and remove the ignition key.

^

Raise the vehicle on a ramp.

^

Disconnect the multi-plug from the steering rack (1 Fig. 2) -6 cyl, (1 Fig. 3) -12 cyl.

^

Remove the steering rack ball joints.

^

Unscrew and remove the steering rack gaiter heat shield securing bolts and remove both heat shields (Fig. 2) -12 cyl only, (drivers side LH drive
illustrated).

Remove the bolt (1 Fig. 4) and nut (2 Fig. 4) securing the lower column (3 Fig. 4) to the steering rack pinion (4 Fig. 4).

Remove the rack feed pipe to sump mounting bracket securing screw.

^

Place a suitable drain tray in position below the steering rack pinion / pipes.

^

Slacken the feed pipe to rack union nut, disconnect the pipe from the rack and allow to drain.

Note:  To keep the system clean and prevent the ingress of any dirt / dust, fit blanking plugs to the rack and pipes whenever they are disconnected.
