SUGGESTIONS FOR RECTIFICATION OF SPEEDOMETER NOISE.

Procedures to be followed when investigating a complaint of ticking noises in mechanical speedometer systems:

If the noise is evident at low speeds, i.e. 20 mph and below, the problem is usually with the cables and drive gears. The following items should be
checked:

1.

The location of the speedometer cables. There should not be any tight bends in the cables. To check that there is no problem with the cables,
they should be removed from the vehicle, and when laid out on a flat surface, the cable should be straight with no bends or kinks. Remove the
inner cable and place on a flat surface. This should also be straight.

Replace inner cable in the outer at the same time noting that the ends of the inner cable is sitting in the center of the ends of the outer cable.

When it has been ascertained that the cables are satisfactory, the other components in the system need to be checked.

The drive gear in the transmission does not have any excessive wear.

3.

The angle drives turn freely and no excessive free play between the two gears.

4.

Ensure that the service interval counter turns freely.

5.

The speedometer spindle turns freely.

If any of the above faults are evident, the component will need to be replaced.

NOTE:

The service interval counter is part of the emissions control system and therefore the replacement mileage and date must be recorded.

We have received a few requests for information about the conversion of the cable speedo system in the XJ-S to electronic. While it is possible to make
this conversion, the costs would be prohibitive. In addition Jaguar reserves the right to change specification as it sees fit and has no obligation to upgrade
this system.
