Knock Sensor: Description and Operation
Operation
The inboard side of each cylinder bank is fitted with a knock sensor. This is a piezo-electric transducer which senses and converts cylinder mechanical
vibrations into electrical signals which are input to the ECM. The knock sensors are used to detect detonation in any particular cylinder and, subject to
the engine management strategy, the ECM then retards the ignition timing for that cylinder.
