Releasing Drive Belt -Tool and Procedure

Issue:

The accessory drive belt on the AJ-V8 engine is tensioned by a spring loaded tensioner. This bulletin gives the procedure for removing and reinstalling
the drive belt.

Action:

The tensioning pulley has a left-hand threaded bolt at its center and will not be loosened by the following procedure:

1.

Place a tool such as Snap-On XDHM 1415 or equivalent, on the center bolt. Lever toward the right side of the vehicle as shown in Illustration 1 to
compress the tensioner spring.

2.

With the tensioner compressed and the belt tension relieved, remove the belt from the generator pulley, Illustration 1.

3.

Slowly release the tool to allow the tensioner pulley spring to the fully extended position.

4.

Remove the drive belt from the pulleys.

5.

Install the new drive belt on the pulleys skipping the generator pulley, Illustration 1.

6.

Place the tool on the center bolt of the tensioner pulley and lever the tool toward the right side of the vehicle to compress the tensioner. Position
the drive belt on the pulley using care to align the belt grooves in the pulley grooves.

7.

Check that the pointer of the tensioner is within the limit marks. For additional information, refer to page 3 of section 303-05 of the XK8 Vehicle
Service Manual.
