P1609 - Pinpoint Test - Revised Procedure

Issue:

This bulletin gives revised instructions to follow when investigating Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) P1609.

This procedure is supplementary to the pinpoint test step A2 on page 19 of Section 303-14 in the XK8 On-Board Diagnostics Manual. Step A2 of the
pinpoint test currently advises replacement of the Engine Control Module (ECM). However, the steps given below must be followed before replacing the
ECM is acceptable.

Action:

Where PDU tests indicate the presence of DTC P1609, proceed as follows before replacing the ECM as indicated in step A2 of the pinpoint test:

1.

Check for a possible short circuit on the flash programming pin on the harness to the Engine Control Module (EM011/003). Refer to Fig. 04.1 of
the XK8 Range 1997 Electrical Guide.

2.

Check for a possible short circuit on the fuel pump relay line (EM013/001). Refer to Fig. 04.2 of the XK8 Range 1997 Electrical Guide.

3.

Should a short circuit exist on either of the above two lines, trace and rectify.

4.

Clear the DTC. Check for its re-occurrence.

5.

Should the fault code now be found to re-occur, replace the ECM.

6.

Continue with step A3 of the pinpoint test.
