REAR AXLE SHAFT AND INNER SEAL APPLICATION
Two different rear axle assemblies are used in Cherokee/Wagoneer models. The AMC/JEEP rear axle is used in 1984, 1985 and early production 1986
models. Later production 1986 models are equipped with the Dana Model 35 rear axle.

Axle Shaft and Inner Seal Interchangeability
The Dana axle shaft can be used in AMC/JEEP axles but only if the Dana bearing, bearing retainer and outer seal are used. In addition, a special inner
seal, PN 8983 503 319, must also be used (Fig. 1). This seal has the proper outside diameter for use in the AMC/JEEP axle tube and the proper inside
diameter for use with the Dana axle shaft.
