REPAIR PROCEDURE

Removal procedure:

1.

Disconnect the negative battery cable.

2.

Disconnect the speedometer cable from the adaptor gear at the transmission (2wd) or transfer case (4wd).

3.

Remove the cable attachment "P-clip" at the left lower control arm pivot bolt.

4.

On vehicles equipped with cruise control, first disconnect the upper speedometer cable from the tach generator unit and then remove the
instrument cluster. The upper cable will then be removed along with the cluster assembly. On vehicles not equipped with cruise control, it will be
necessary to remove the instrument cluster screws and then gently pull the cluster toward the steering wheel just enough to allow the speedometer
cable to be removed from the rear of the cluster housing.

5.

Totally remove the instrument panel cluster (refer to the M.R. 244 or 1989 Jeep Service Manual for removal procedure).

6.

From under the hood, remove the rubber cable grommet from the bulkhead and remove the cable.

Installation procedure:

NOTE:

ON VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH CRUISE CONTROL, THE TACH GENERATOR UNIT WILL HAVE TO BE REVERSED FROM
ITS ORIGINAL POSITION. THIS IS TO MAKE SURE THAT THE THRUST BEARING INSIDE THE TACH GENERATOR IS
ORIENTED CORRECTLY. IF THE THRUST BEARING IS NOT ORIENTED CORRECTLY, SPEEDOMETER NEEDLE FLUTTER
MAY OCCUR. SEE FIGURE 1.
