Installation Procedure - Service Revision Manual
SERVICE MANUAL REVISION:
The procedure for the installation of the timing chain and tensioner on Jeep vehicles equipped with the 2.5L engine has been revised as follows. Please
make reference of this revision on page 9-36 in your 1990 - 1991 Jeep Service Manual, Publication # 81-370-0145 and 81-370-1145.
PROCEDURE REVISION:
TIMING CHAIN AND SPROCKET
The timing chain tensioner reduces noise and prolongs timing chain life. In addition, it compensates for slack in a worn or stretched chain and maintains
the correct valve timing.

REMOVAL
1.
With the ignition key in the off position, disconnect the battery negative cable.
2.
Remove the fan and shroud.
3.
Remove the accessory drive belt(s).
4.
Remove the crankshaft vibration damper and pulley.
5.
Remove the timing case cover.
6.
Rotate the crankshaft until the 0 timing mark on the crankshaft sprocket is closest to and on a center line with the timing mark on the camshaft
sprocket, Figure 1.
