Steering Gear Assembly

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
This repair involves replacing the power steering gear.
1.
Replace the steering gear assembly. Refer to appropriate service manual for removal and installation procedures.
STEERING GEAR "HISS",
A high pitched noise caused by oil flowing through the steering gear. This noise travels up the steering column into the passenger compartment. (This
noise can be reduced by the rubber isolator in the intermediate steering shaft).
DIAGNOSIS:
Start engine and turn off all accessories. Turn steering wheel slowly left and right with the vehicle in PARK and brakes applied. A high pitched noise
similar to water rushing through a valve may be heard in the passenger compartment. It will appear to be coming up the steering column.
NOTE:
Engine speed should be between 800 and 1200 RPM.

REPAIR PROCEDURE:
Replace the intermediate shaft only if "hiss" occurs in one direction of turn.
