Vehicle may contain an out of tolerance throttle body. This could prevent the accelerator from returning to idle when released.
Replace suspect throttle bodies.

INTERMITTENT NO START/IDLE FLARE
Some 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer vehicles with 4.0L engines may exhibit an intermittent fast idle. When diagnosing a vehicle with this condition, perform
the following procedure completely.
Procedure
Perform a vehicle test using the M.S. 1700 Tester. If a fault is found, refer to the M.S. 1700 Manual and correct the problem. If a fault is not found or the
condition still exists after correcting a fault, proceed with the following procedure.

Replace any part or repair any condition that does not operate as specified.
