Engine - Intermittent No Start/Idle Flare

INTERMITTENT NO START/IDLE FLARE

Some 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer vehicles with 4.0L engines may exhibit an intermittent fast idle. When diagnosing a vehicle with this condition, perform
the following procedure completely.

Procedure

Perform a vehicle test using the M.S. 1700 Tester. If a fault is found, refer to the M.S. 1700 Manual and correct the problem. If a fault is not found or the
condition still exists after correcting a fault, proceed with the following procedure.

NOTE:

Replace any part or repair any condition that does not operate as specified.

Check the area around the accelerator pedal for anything (such as the floor mat)

interfering with correct pedal operation. Repair as necessary.

2.

Disconnect the battery negative cable.

Disconnect the accelerator cable from the accelerator pedal arm (2) by squeezing the tabs at the rear of the clip and pushing the cable
through. Remove accelerator pedal mounting nuts (4).
Remove the accelerator pedal assembly from the vehicle.
