TYPE II INSTRUMENT CLUSTER SERVICE
This I.S. Note contains service procedures for the Type II instrument cluster used in 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer models. The Type II cluster was phased
into production in September 1986.
Information covered in this I.S. Note includes instrument cluster and speedometer cable removal/installation and new SRT/TIC information where
applicable.

TYPE II INSTRUMENT CLUSTER IDENTIFICATION
The Type II cluster is identified by the letters "NS" at the base of the speedometer and tachometer (or fuel gauge on models without a tachometer) (Fig.
1).
The speedometer cable attachment has been changed and can no longer be disconnected by reaching up under the instrument panel.
NOTE:
The lettering shape on instrument faces is not a reliable means of identification. The instruments in Type II clusters have two graphic styles.
TYPE II INSTRUMENT CLUSTER REMOVALWITHOUT CRUISE CONTROL
1.
Position the vehicle on a hoist.
2.
Disconnect the battery negative cable.
3.
Raise the vehicle on the hoist.
4.
Disconnect the speedometer cable at the transfer case on 4WD models or the transmission on 2WD models.
5.
Remove the bracket attaching the speedometer cable to the driver side frame rail.
6.
Move the speedometer cable forward and upward to provide slack.
7.
Lower the vehicle.
