Starter Relay: Testing and Inspection
Starter Motor Relay Test
1.
Disconnect electrical connectors from starter motor relay terminals G and I.
2.
Using a suitable ohmmeter, check resistance between relay terminals G and I. Resistance should be approximately 22 ohms, if not replace relay.
3.
Connect ohmmeter between either relay terminal G or I and battery negative post. An infinite ohmmeter reading should be obtained, if not, replace
relay. If reading is satisfactory, reconnect electrical connector.
4.
Disconnect electrical connector from starter motor relay terminal SOL.
5.
Connect a suitable voltmeter between relay terminal SOL and battery negative post. With ignition switch in start position, voltmeter should
indicate 12 battery voltage. If battery voltage is not present, check for improper bulk head wiring harness connection, defective wiring or improper
ignition switch adjustment.
6.
If battery voltage is present, but relay is not operating, proceed as follows:
a. Place transmission in neutral and block drive wheels.
b. With relay terminal I connected, connect a jumper wire between terminal G and ground.
c. If starter relay does not click, replace relay.
d. If starter relay clicks, repair ground circuit.
