Steering Gear: Testing and Inspection
If the steering gear housing ball plug leaks or is raised above the housing surface on vehicles built prior to the 1985 model year, repair the housing as
follows:
1. Seat ball in housing using a suitable punch, then spray ball and housing with Loctite Solvent No. 75559 or equivalent.
2. Dry area with compressed air, then apply Loctite Sealer No. 290 or equivalent to both ball and housing.
3. Allow sealer to cure for approximately 2 hours, then reinstall steering gear.
This procedure is not effective on models produced after 1985. If ball plug leakage is evident on these vehicles, the entire gear assembly should be
replaced.
