Axle Bearing: Service and Repair
Axle Hub & Bearing Service
REMOVAL
1. Raise and support front of vehicle, then remove wheel, brake caliper and rotor.
2. Remove cotter pin, locknut, axle hub retaining nut and washer.
3. Remove hub/carrier assembly to steering knuckle attaching bolts, then the hub/carrier assembly.

DISASSEMBLY
1. Press hub from carrier, then remove bearings and seals.
2. Inspect bearing cups for wear or scoring. If replacement is necessary, drive bearing cups from carrier with a suitable drift. If replacement is
required, replace bearings and cups in matched sets only.
ASSEMBLY
1. Press new bearing cups into carrier, if applicable.
2. Fill steering knuckle and carrier cavities and coat seals with lithium base wheel bearing grease.
3. Repack, then install bearings into carrier.
4. Install new seal on hub side of carrier, then press hub through carrier.
INSTALLATION
1. Fill steering knuckle hub cavity with chassis grease, then install hub/carrier assembly. Torque hub/carrier assembly to steering knuckle attaching
bolts to 75 ft. lbs.
2. Install washer and axle hub retaining nut, torque retaining nut to 175 ft. lbs., then install locknut and cotter pin.
3. Install rotor, caliper and wheel, then lower vehicle.
