TRANSFER CASE NOISE
Some 1987 Cherokee/Wagoneer vehicles equipped with a 231 (Command Trac) or a 242 (SelecTrac) transfer case may experience excessive transfer
case noise transmitted into the passenger compartment through the transfer case shift linkage.
This condition may be corrected by replacing the linkage bushings and adjusting the linkage.
PROCEDURE
1.
Inspect bushings (A), (B), and (C) to determine bushing color. If the bushings are light green, replace them with black bushings, PN 323 8418.
2.
Remove the shift lever boot.
3.
Place the shift lever (D) in 4L position.
4.
Using a 4 mm (0.157-in.) shim (E), check the adjustment of the transfer case shifter. There should be a 4 mm (0.157-in.) space between the
transfer case shift lever (D) and the end of the shifter gate (F).
5.
If the linkage is adjusted properly remove the shim and install the shift lever boot. If the linkage is not properly adjusted proceed as follows:
