CLUTCH HYDRAULIC SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS

On some 1983-85 Eagle/Jeep models with a hydraulic clutch linkage, fluid leakage from one or both both clutchc ylinders, may becaused by the
formation of an abrasive substance in the system fluid. In some cases, material in the master cylinder-to-slave cylinder hose may chemically react with
the fluid to produce a mildly abrasive chloride compound.

Include the following information as part of your normal diagnosis and repair procedure when servicing the clutch hydraulic system.
PROCEDURE

1.

Inspect the system to determine which clutch hydraulic cylinder is leaking.

a.

If the slave cylinder is leaking, remove, clean and overhaul the cylinder.

b.

If the master cylinder is leaking, remove and discard the cylinder.

2.

Remove and discard the hose that connects the master cylinder to the slave cylinder.

3.

Drain the hydraulic fluid from the cylinder not removed.

4.

Install the replacement master cylinder or the repaired slave cylinder.

5.

Install a replacement master cylinder-toslave cylinder connecting hose. Refer to the parts list at the end of this I.S. Note for, replacement hose part
numbers.

6.

Refill and bleed the clutch hydraulic system. Refill the system with AMC/JEEP brake fluid, P/N 8982 200 215, only.

7.

Verify proper clutch operation and that all hose connections are tight and leak-free.
