Cylinder Head Gasket: Service and Repair
Cylinder Head Installation

INSTALLATION

NOTE:  If the cylinder head is to be replaced and the original valves used, measure the valve stem diameter. Only standard size valves can be used
with a service replacement cylinder head unless the replacement head valve stem guide bores are reamed to accommodate oversize valve stems.
Remove all carbon build up and reface the valves.

1. Install the valves in the cylinder head using replacement valve stem oil deflectors.

2. Transfer all attached components from the original cylinder head that are not included with the replacement head. Do not install the temperature

sending unit until coolant is installed. This permits trapped air to escape from the cylinder block and head. Refer to Cooling Systems/Service and
Repair for the proper procedure.

CAUTION:  Do not apply sealing compound on the cylinder head and block gasket surfaces. Do not allow sealing compound to enter the cylinder
bore.

3. Coat the cylinder bores with clean engine oil.

4. Apply an even coat of Perfect Seal sealing compound, or equivalent, to both sides of the replacement cylinder head gasket and position the gasket

on the cylinder block with the word TOP facing up.

5. Install the cylinder head. Tighten the bolts in sequence Fig. 8 as follows:

CAUTION:  Cylinder head bolts should be reused only once. Replace the head bolts if they were used before or if they have a paint dab on the
top of the bolt.

a. Coat the threads of the stud bolt in the # 11 position with Loctite 592 sealant, or equivalent, before installation.

b. Tighten all cylinder head bolts to 29 Nm (22 ft. lbs.) torque using the tightening sequence.

c. Tighten all cylinder head bolts to 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque using the tightening sequence.

d. Recheck all cylinder head bolts at 61 Nm (45 ft. lbs.) torque using the tightening sequence.

e. Tighten all cylinder head bolts (except # 11) to 149 Nm (110 ft. lbs.) torque and tighten bolt # 11 to 135 Nm (100ft. lbs.) torque using the

tightening sequence.

NOTE:  Clean and mark each bolt with a dab of paint after tightening. Should you encounter a set of bolts which were painted during an earlier
servicing operation, replace them.

6. Connect the battery negative cable.

7. Install the ignition coil and bracket assembly.

8. Install the spark plugs and connect the ignition wires. Tighten the spark plugs to 37 Nm (27 ft. lbs.) torque.

9. Attach the air conditioner compressor mounting bracket to the cylinder head, if removed.

10. Install the intake and exhaust manifolds. Use the correct tightening sequence. Refer to Engine/Intake Manifold/Service and Repair for the

proper procedures.
