Cherokee 4WD L6-242 4.0L VIN S MFI (1992)
1.
Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and brake drum.
2.
Loosen differential cover retaining bolts and drain lubricant. Remove retaining bolts and differential cover.
3.
Rotate differential case to access differential pinion gear mate shaft lock screw. Remove lock screw and pinion gear mate shaft.
4.
Push axle shaft inward, then remove C-lock clip from axle shaft recessed groove. Pull axle shaft out from axle tube.
5.
Remove seal from axle shaft tube using a suitable tool.
6.
Remove bearing from axle shaft tube using bearing remover tool No. 6310 (T.Ar 960-02) or equivalent.
INSTALLATION
1.
Wipe axle shaft bearing bore clean.
2.
Install new bearing into axle shaft tube using bearing installer tool No. 6436 and drive handle tool No. C-4171 or equivalents. Ensure bearing
seats squarely in bearing bore.
3.
Install new seal into axle shaft tube using drive handle tool C-4171 and flat side of seal installer tool No. 6437 or equivalents. Seal is installed to
proper depth when installation tool contacts axle tube face.
4.
Lubricate bearing bore and axle seal lip.
5.
Slide axle shaft through axle tube and engage axle splines with differential side gear splines. Use care not to tear seal lip when installing axle
shaft.
6.
Position C-lock clip into axle shaft recessed groove, then pull outward on axle hub to seat C-lock in differential side gear counterbore.
7.
Install pinion gear mate shaft and lock screw. Tighten lock screw to specifications.
8.
Clean differential to differential cover mating surfaces.
9.
Apply a small bead of a suitable sealant to differential cover to differential mating surfaces. Install cover and tighten retaining bolts to
specifications.
10.
Install brake drum and wheel. Tighten lug nuts to specifications.
11.
Remove fill plug and replenish differential lubricant. Refer to Transmission and Drivetrain/Differential/Specifications/Capacities for fill
capacities. On models with "TRAC-Loc" differential, use "TRAC-Loc" lubricant additive. Install fill plug and tighten to specifications.
12.
Lower vehicle and check brake operation. On models with "TRAC-Loc" differential ensure lubricant is circulated through clutch discs by
maneuvering vehicle in a figure-eight pattern approximately 12 times.
