THIS I.S. NOTE HAS BEEN REVISED AS INDICATED BY THE REVISION BARS:
V-6 ENGINE OIL LEAK
Some 1984-1986 Jeep Cherokee/Wagoneer and 1986 Comanche models with V-6 engines may experience oil leaks at various locations. Determine the
source of the leak(s) using a fluorescent oil additive and a black lamp.
Three possible locations are covered in this I.S. Note:
A.
Cylinder Head Cover Area
B.
Intake Manifold Area
C.
Oil Pan - Rear Cradle Area
PROCEDURE
A.
Cylinder Head Cover Area
1.
Install a replacement cylinder head cover gasket, P/N 8983 503 179, as outlined on pages B-49 and B-50 in the July, 1985, edition of the M.R. 244
Workshop Manual and/or pages B-47 and B-48 of the M.R. 277 Workshop Manual.
NOTE:
The metal pins located on the side of each bolt hole prevent over-crush of the gasket and torque falloff when the cylinder head cover bolts are
tightened.
Fig. 1 - Sealing Location
2.
Place a small amount of RTV sealer on the seam area (A) (Fig. 1) where the cylinder head and the intake manifold mate, to
eliminate any gap or step at the sealing surface of the cylinder head before installation of the cylinder head cover gasket.
B.
Intake Manifold Leak
NOTE:
This leak is located at manifold-to-block mating surface at rear of engine.
1.
Remove the intake manifold as outlined on page B-51 in the July, 1985, edition of the M.R. 244 Workshop Manual and/or page B-52 of the M.R.
277 Workshop Manual.
2.
Clean the manifold of all gasket material.
3.
Place rags or tape over the intake manifold ports to keep out dirt and aluminum chips.
4.
Scribe a line on the intake manifold at the rear mating flange.
