V-6 ENGINE FUEL SYSTEM DIAGNOSIS
The fuel pump on some 1984-1985 70 Series 2.8L V-6 engines may occasionally return too much fuel to the tank during operation. This could result in
low fuel volume at the carburetor causing hard hot starts, or lower than normal acceleration and top speed.
Service correction involves installing a fuel flow restrictor in the fuel return line connected to the fuel pump.
PROCEDURE
1.
Disconnect the air inlet tube from the air cleaner and move the tube aside.
2.
Disconnect the fuel return hose from the fuel pump.
RESTRICTOR LOCATION
3.
Install the restrictor, PN 321 3949, in the fuel return hose. Push the restrictor up and into the hose until it is in position A which is approximately
13 mm (1/2-in.) from the end of the hose (see illustration).
NOTE:
Use a tube fitting or similar item to push the restrictor into the hose.
4.
Connect the fuel return hose to the fuel pump and connect the air inlet tube to the air cleaner.
