Steering Gear Replacement

MANUAL STEERING GEAR

1. Disconnect steering shaft from gear, then raise and support vehicle.
2. Disconnect center link from pitman arm.
3. Remove stabilizer bar as previously outlined.
4. Remove pitman arm retaining nut, then scribe alignment marks on sector shaft and arm.
5. Using tool J-6632-01 or equivalent, remove pitman arm from shaft.
6. Remove steering gear retaining bolts, then the steering gear.
7. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering gear retaining bolts to 65 ft. lbs., pitman arm retaining nut to 185 ft. lbs. and center link retaining nut

to 35 ft. lbs. Stake pitman arm retaining nut to sector shaft for proper retention.

POWER STEERING GEAR

1. Place front wheels in straight ahead position.
2. Disconnect hoses from steering gear, then plug hoses to prevent dirt from entering.
3. Disconnect intermediate shaft from stub shaft.
4. Raise and support vehicle, then disconnect center link from pitman arm.
5. Remove stabilizer bar as outlined previously.
6. Remove pitman arm retaining nut, then scribe alignment marks on arm and sector shaft.
7. Using tool J-6632-01 or equivalent, remove pitman arm from shaft.
8. Remove steering gear retaining bolts, then the steering gear.
9. Reverse procedure to install. Torque steering gear retaining bolts to 65 ft. lbs., pitman arm retaining nut to 185 ft. lbs. and center link retaining nut

to 35 ft. lbs. Stake pitman arm retaining nut to sector shaft for proper retention, then bleed hydraulic system as outlined in "Power Steering Pump,
Replace" procedure.
