Parking Pawl: Service and Repair

PARK LOCK COMPONENT

Park Lock Components

REMOVAL

Remove the adapter housing and transfer case as outlined in Governor Valve Removal and Installation.

DISASSEMBLY

1. Slide the shaft (1) out of the housing and remove the park sprag (2) and spring (3).

2. Remove the snap ring (4) and slide the reaction plug and pin assembly (5) out of the housing.

Control Rod Replacement

To replace the park lock control rod (6), refer to Valve Body Removal and Installation.

CLEANING AND INSPECTION

1. Check the sprag shaft (1) for scores and for free movement in the housing and sprag (2). Check the sprag and control rod springs (3 & 7) for

loss of tension or distortion. Check the square lug on the sprag for broken edges.

2. Check the lugs on the governor support (park gear) for broken edges. Check the knob on the end of the control rod for nicks, burrs and free

turning.

ASSEMBLY

1. Install the reaction plug and pin assembly (5) in the housing and install the snap ring (4).

2. Position the sprag (2) and spring (3) in the housing and install the shaft (1).

Be sure the square lug on the sprag is facing the park gear and that the spring is positioned so that it moves the sprag away from the gear.

3. Install the transfer case and adapter housing as outlined in Governor Valve Removal and Installation.
